Bird Removal in Jackson
Almost every native bird is protected by federal law, active nests included, so what is legal depends on the species.
A blocked dryer vent is both a fire risk and, if the nest is active, a legal problem: nearly all native birds are federally protected.
Birds in Hinds County: who does what
The Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks sets the rule directly: landowners, leaseholders and their designated agents may take nuisance animals year round on land they own or lease, and nobody may trap on another person's land without permission. A trapping licence is required unless you are working land deeded in your own name. There is also a Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator permit, whose holders file an annual report. The state does not turn up and remove the animal; it decides who is allowed to.
For identifying an animal or damage before anyone is paid to look, the MSU Extension, Hinds County office is at 1500 Raymond Lake Rd., Raymond, MS 39154, 601-857-3242 (office page).
What Mississippi law says about birds
Mississippi needs no state or federal permit to control crows caught committing, or about to commit, depredations as defined in federal rule 50 CFR 21.43. Other native birds remain protected by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. All Mississippi rules →

Signs, and why they matter
- Chirping from a bathroom fan, dryer vent or kitchen exhaust
- Nesting material poking from a vent hood or dormer gap
- A dryer that has stopped venting properly: a real fire risk
- Blocked dryer vents are a documented cause of house fires
- Droppings carry histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis
How removal works
Identify the species first, because that determines what is legal. Where removal is permitted, the nest is cleared, the duct or vent cleaned, and a purpose-made vent guard fitted so it cannot be renested. Where the species is protected and the nest is active, the lawful answer is to wait, then exclude.
